Moodle 4.0: A sneak preview

A sneak preview of what Moodle 4.0 has in store for us.

Moodle 4.0 focuses on harnessing the power of UX (user experience) to transform Moodle LMS(external link), and is scheduled for release in November 2021.

Moodle LMS 4.0 updates

The Moodle team set out to understand their users and after carrying out an initial benchmark survey(external link) the team will be focusing on some key themes:

  • educators' ability to create, duplicate, reuse and move course content
  • students' capacity to easily navigate the interfaces
  • quiz and assignment setup and workflow
  • fragmented gradebook workflows.

What our eLearning experts think about the new release

Dan Marsden, eLearning expert at Catalyst, says he is looking forward to using the great improvements to the user experience, which make it easier for users to access relevant information in a more natural way. This should massively improve things for those students and teachers who are new to Moodle.

Dan has spent some time previewing Moodle’s progress and says, “I love the improved workflow for students – making the important information such as due dates/current activities more prominent – decreasing the number of steps a student has to take to get the most relevant information for them ‘today’.”

Martin Dougiamas, Moodle Founder and CEO, explains:

“We are breaking new ground with this release and creating processes to obtain wide input from our community is key to its success. Our community is one of Moodle’s greatest strengths and thorough engagement with them has been key in developing a UX roadmap that tackles and prioritises the most desired enhancements. We’re looking for a “wow!” from our users, whether you’ve been using Moodle for 10 years or 10 minutes so that we can empower educators worldwide to do amazing things with the deep features Moodle has developed over the years.”

And, from what we can see from these Moodle mock-ups(external link) (see below) – we’re on track for an intuitive easy-to-use learning tool.
