Catalyst and Te Tiriti

I whakakī a Kris Wehipeihana (Ngāti Tukorehe) i taua tūnga. He kapapori tō Kris i te whakahaere whare pukapuka.

The company has committed to investigating how to better bring te ao Māori into our work and to improving our relationship with tangata whenua.

Over the past few years Catalyst has introduced a number of initiatives to support our commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the awareness of this amongst our staff. These include:

• Basic tikanga education via Toro Mai and Massey University
• Te Tiriti education – including sponsorship of Te Tiriti x Tech ki Pōneke in 2019
• Ngā kōrero a mua o te rohe nei (local history lessons)
• Te reo Māori sessions
• Kapa haka rōpū

In 2019, the position of Kaihuawaere Matihiko | Digital Facilitator was established to support and increase Catalyst's ability to provide services to Māori, and those with a kaupapa Māori focus. The role was filled by Chris Cormack (Kāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe, Waitaha). Chris is a long time employee at Catalyst and a foundation developer of the library management platform Koha. He is an active koha-library-management participant in Te Mana Raraunga(external link) (The Māori Data Sovereignty Network).

His work in this forum aligns with Catalyst's active and vocal advocacy for New Zealand organisations (particularly government) having a policy of managing their data in Aotearoa-based infrastructure. The Catalyst Cloud(external link), on which we host most of our customers’ systems, is 100% located and managed in Aotearoa and allows us to support meeting principle 1, of the 6 principles of Māori Data Sovereignty.

In 2021, the position of Kaiwhakamanawa | Relationship Manager was established to support the Kaihuawaere Matihiko and consider how we can improve the use of tikanga Māori in our day-to-day work. The role was filled by Kris Wehipeihana (Ngāti Tukorehe). Kris has a background in library management.

• Ngāti Tamaoho on their Koha Library project.
